Woman In Life
2nd National Photo Competition · First Prize & Jury Prize · Istanbul, Turkey · 1975
A turning point in my photographic life. I made this photograph only five years after I began photography. It became the first of the photographs that I regard as iconic in my work, and years later it was chosen for the cover of my photography book.
The woman in the background was deliberately photographed out of focus. The man occupies the foreground with a strong, sharply defined presence; the woman is discovered only afterwards, behind him and outside the plane of focus. The blur was not a technical accident, but a conscious part of the photograph’s meaning.
At the 2nd National “Woman In Life” Photography Competition, my work “Woman 75 1” received First Prize and “Woman 75 2” received the Jury Prize.
